Nice people

These are the decrees and laws
you must be careful
to follow

Destroy completely all the places
on the high mountains
and on the hills

And under every spreading tree
where the nations you are dispossessing
worship their gods

Break down their altars
smash their sacred stones
and burn their Asherah poles in the fire

Cut down the idols of their gods
and wipe out their names
from those places
Deuteronomy 12 v1-3

  1. Very thought-provoking. It reverberates well beyond its immediate theme. One doesn't need to be a theologian or a philosopher to know that genocide is obviously wrong, period, whatever it says in Deuteronomy. We are free to think for ourselves, and there is no need for anyone who feels moved to undertake a spiritual journey to agonize about attitudes to being gay, women priests, etc.

  2. Thanks, Dominic. On the nail as usual!
