The Audacity of Hope

Alice Walker, 67 year old author of The Color Purple, the recipient of the 2010 Lennon/Ono Grant for Peace, is a peace activist with Flotilla II.

The ship carrying Alice Walker is 'The Audacity of Hope'. It is carrying about 40 peace activists.

Earlier today the Coastguard prevented the vessel from leaving Greek territorial waters.

'The Audacity of Hope' was escorted to 'another port' and the vessel's captain was taken away, presumably to 'face charges'.

A Greek official told the peace activists: "We are acting on instructions from your government."

Alice Walker and the other 'highly dangerous' passengers, people like 84-year old Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein and ex-Israeli Air Force pilot Yonatan Shapira, were still on board 'The Audacity of Hope' at the time of this post.

An Irish ship which was due to join the flotilla has been sabotaged in Turkish waters. Luckily the damage was discovered before the vessel was on the high seas. In Greece a Swedish-Norwegian-Greek vessel was also sabotaged and put out of action.

The flotilla planned to sail from Greece through international waters to Gaza - 'completely avoiding Israeli territorial waters'.

The 'dangerous cargo' being carried on 'The Audacity of Hope' includes 100's of 'letters of hope' from American children to the children of Palestine.

A link to Alice Walker's blog appears in my A-Z listings. There you can read some of her 'dangerous' writings and her poems.
