ReplyDeleteWhen I stayed in Russia last year my landlady was frightened to speak about Putin and would only whisper about him and then change the subject quickly. When I suggested we look out for his car in St Petersburg and then follow it (because he is there often she told me) she went into shock at my bold suggestion. She told me nothing has changed in Russia and instead of the KGB they now have the FSB (or something). I don't know if any of this connects with your poem!
ReplyDeleteRachel, interesting what you say but I have to point out that there is no mention of the Olympics in the poem. Although as you you have deduced there is some atmosphere in the poem to do with the participation of a certain country -Japan (unsaid) in the Olympics. The games are the games countries like Japan like to play. I've split 'trophy' into quarters to make it easier. The top relates to whale hunting in a white ocean i.e. the antarctic which takes place every winter and involves factory ships from Japan. The second level relates to the same country and highlights the pollution of the Pacific from Fukushima and other reactors in those islands. The third level relates to a new wax invented for skis. And the fourth to the new secrecy act implemented in that country in my example - Japan. So it creates the right feeling vis-a-vis your landlady. And yes Pres. Abe is at the games. Having awarded me the cerificate you may award him the cup.

ReplyDeleteI would also point out that there was no mention of the Olympics in my comment. I thought only of Russia when I wrote it. I should of course have realised that because it is you you would only have Japan on your mind.
ReplyDeleteRachel, Unfortunately I'm still in my blue Fukushima period. Every day it gets worse. Today the thing was shaken; 'jolted' is the word they like to use when an earthquake moves that 10 meter pile of reclaimed jellied earth it's built on.
