I think a slight somberness which you flag up is in keeping with the events and the time. They are leaving their homeland, fleeing from the Nazi terror, they don't know if they'll ever come back. Perhaps we've been accustomed to hearing it as a jolly song, which is really isn't if we listen closely to the words - edelweiss bless my homeland forever. They place their faith in the flower, which will still be there in a high pure environment despite the war and the atrocities.
