ReplyDeleteIt never went away, but was just waiting for the right conditions to re-emerge. Scary. I gather the vote was very close.
Top picture. Mussolini in Abyssinia. 700,000 Ethiopians murdered under his 5-year rule rule which ended in 1941 when British, French and South African troops returned the country to the rightful ruler. The unannounced war began in 1935 with the dropping of 300 tons of mustard gas and an invasion by the largest military force ever seen in Africa. When Mussolini announced his 'victory' on 9th May 1936 from the balcony of the Palazzo Venezia in Rome he received 42 curtain calls from his jubilant supporters.
DeleteThe vote in Austria at the weekend was 50.3% to 49.7%. A proverbial hair's breadth. Both sides were jubilant.
I nearly forgot to mention. We had a mass shooting on election day. A neo-Nazi with Kalashnikov gunned down 13 campers at an outdoor concert venue (2 dead, 11 serious) and then turned the weapon himself. So 3 dead. Some still critical. Brings back memories of a certain Mr. Brevik.
DeleteThe far right is no longer a minority party in Europe or, now with Trump, in the US. We can't ignore them. But I'm not sure how they can be countered.
ReplyDeleteThey are springing up everywhere like mushrooms. Even in Israel. Over there many knowledgable persons say they have taken over the reins. Brevik, whom I mentioned in my second reply predicted this would happen in his infamous diatribe following that particular massacre.
DeleteIt could easily go pear shaped here with the president elect already receiving far-right death threats. Security has been increased we are assured.
