According to the New York Times, Assange meant the DNC leaks as a personal attack on Clinton. I don't think it's had the desired effect as neither Hillary nor Obama are much involved with the DNC. Party affiliation in the US is looser than in Europe. Witness the fact that Sanders could run as a Dem despite not being one. The parties also have little power, which explains the nomination of Trump.
Whatever the NY Times says I think it's not over yet. Trump called for Russia to release 30,000 "lost emails" on CNN last night as seen here in Europe.
