Christine Busta looks at nature

The sensitive and insightful Austrian poet Christine Busta, who died in 1987, is known for her appreciation of the natural world. The following poems are translated here to illustrate her philospohy.

THE CROWS WRITE IN BLACK
and in white - the seagulls,
in the grey winter sky.

Never will I decipher the messages
that fill me from year to year
with the austere secrets of life.

THE BOOK

Open
lying on the path.
The lightest book on earth,
it has only two pages.

Astonished I read the magic signs.
It leaps into the air.
No apocalypse.

Three words only from the secret
revelation of summer:
The Peacock Butterfly.
