Gu Cheng's darkness of the night

The M57 cylinder is 4,000 light years away in the musical constellation of Lyra. See also Poet-in-Residence's poem Eye of God or Ring Nebula Deep Field (via blog searchbox).

Darkness of the night gave me black eyes
I used it to search for light

  1. A clever short poem. It took me a moment to get it - I'm always a bit slow on the uptake!

I don't want to lower the tone, but are you into Gary Larson cartoons? I saw a great one of (as I remember it)a serious-looking astronomer in a big observatory looking up a big telescope - only he has a black ring round his eye. Two other astronomers and stood where he can't see them sniggering over a tin of bootpolish!

  2. Dominic, I think the cartoon you mentioned must be the same one I have seen, and more than once. Perhaps it's one of the world's most syndicated cartoons? Standard stock for lazy newspaper editors during ufo outbreaks, comet appearances, etc.
mentioning this reminds me of Patrick Moore's Sky at Night which I watched regularly for more years than I care to remember. I would always think is his eye closed more this week than it was last week? If the answer was yes, I'd tell myself that he'd been peering too long through his telescope. I once sent Patrick a question. He replied with a postcard. Sadly I've lost it. Sorry, Patrick!

  3. Thanks Jon, I've put a Metcheck Link on the Bard page. Now I can see the weather!
