WHEN IN ROME...

AB INITIO AB ORIGINE AB OVO AB OVO USQUE AD
MALA ABSENTE REO MORE MAJORUM MIRABILE
DICTU MIRABILE VISU PER MARE PER TERRAS
STUDIUM IMMANE LOQUENDI RENASCENTUR JOCI
CAUSA IN MEDIA RES ITA LEX SCRIPTA HEU PRISCA
FIDES!

When in Rome...

"From the beginning..."
"From the origin..."
"From the egg..."
"From the egg to the apples"

The accused being absent

"After the manner of our ancestors"
"Wonderful to relate..."
"Wonderful to see..."
"Through sea and land"

An insatiable desire for talking

"They will be born again..."
"Into the midst of things"
"For the sake of a joke"
"Thus the law stands written"

Alas for the ancient faith!

  1. "For the sake of a joke"

Fantastic - I can see I shall have to take this for my motto!

(Which link is faulty, I wonder? Maybe try the old copy and paste instead, for Alias Jinksy

  2. I am a twit. I puzzled over translating the latin (I couldn't - only very roughly here and there) before I read the poem. I read the poem. I puzzled over the latin. I read the poem... aha! Post tenebras lux. My only excuse is that it is only 9am. :)

  3. all roads lead to Rome
    but I've never been
    nor intend to

ah wait a minute - I have been to a very wee hamlet called Rome - somewhere between Settle and Bowland if I recall rightly.

  4. Jinksy, by all means use the motto. I'm always changing mine. My header motto, at the moment, is from Samuel Beckett.

Re the other thing, it was the link where you said "visit my new poetry blog ..." - I'll try it again later, and if it doesn't work I'll try the old one.

  6. Gerald,
Italians do it in the street with loudness and gusto! Gossip, I mean.

Interesting about the hamlet. I think Settle is Roman.

  7. I have not been to Rome, Italy, but I have been to Rome, Georgia, where there is even a sculpture of a wolf suckling Romus and Remulus that was given to the city by Benito Mussolini. If I ever find a faux Trevi fountain I have three coins at the ready....

  8. Silly me! Of course I meant Remus and Romulus!

    Dr. Spooner lives!
