The Aftermath

Over the years, the appearance of purple spots came to be dreaded and later on other forms of cancer besides leukemia were showing up at higher than normal rates: carcinomas of the thyroid, the lungs, the breast, the salivary glands, the stomach, the liver, the urinary tract, and the male and female reproductive organs.

One of the most shocking findings was that some children were born with heads smaller than normal .

It was in the late sixties before analyses showed chromosome aberrations .

There were several ailments, less life-threatening than the cancers, that were thought by many doctors to have resulted from exposure: anemia, liver dysfunction, sexual problems, endocrine disorders, accelerated aging and debilitation.

The above was taken and slightly edited (for easy reading) from the chapter The Aftermath in the book Hiroshima by John Hersey. It refers to the medical condition of persons who were near the explosion. However it must be remembered that the Hiroshima explosion was over within a few minutes and that the Fukushima plant is still venting steam and radiation after 4 months.

The point of this piece is not to cause alarm , but simply to provide some appropriate and timely information.

Fact: There are 3 million people living within 100 kilometers of the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Quote: "This is far worse than Chernobyl" - Professor Christopher Busby (European Committee on Radiation Risks)
