Ritual

At cockcrow
morn
before going to milk
she softly unclips
the chain
and the cross
from her neck
and facing
the mirror
she knows
that there is
no other future
and she smiles
but only to herself
when she hangs
the instrument
of torture
on a cowshed
nail
