What the Fuku is going on over there?

As predicted here, and in case it's not on the news it happened yesterday, Friday, that a machine weighing half a ton fell into the nuclear fuel pool containing, as I understand it, nearly 600 spent fuel rods awaiting removal along with an unspecified number of unspent fuel rods at Fukushima Daiichi unit 3.

Questions:
Have the pool and/or it's contents been compromised?
Can the remaining nuclear rods be removed safely?
What is the worst case scenario?

  1. It could be a pebble in a lake for all I know.

  2. It will probably almost as much mainstream news attention as a pebble in a lake. The ripples will need watching. Will update in comments if any more news on the pebble.

  3. Headline in today's, or is it yesterday's edition of The Verge warns Oktober Bierfest visitors that 1 in 3 wild boars are over the radiation limit for human consumption and some are dozens of times over. Chernobyl is the prime suspect. All silent on the Fuku front. For now.
