  1. It is exactly 400 years since the Bard of Avon left his mortal coil. He only wrote one play set in Vienna, although he imagined Vienna to be somewhere in Italy. The modern Shakespeare, the play was Measure for Measure, might measure himself against the old Shakespeare. The photos might serve as the germs of a plot. Vienna is the European center for under the table and round the corner political intrigue and oddments of that kind, as it has a long tradition going back to the Habsburg era when a prime minister could be shot dead in the back room of a restaurant and hardly an eyebrow be raised. One need look no further than the plannings and plottings of groups with shadowy interests who sent their agents scuttling about the old empire with instructions from contacts in Vienna in early 1914 when it looked as if the old emperor would succumb to pneumonia and a power struggle between Austria and Hungary was beginning to rumble under the radar. Yes, Shakespeare would not be short of material today. Maybe a Bard of the Danube will surface pretty soon. We can but hope.

    1. If you mean the indestructible Richard Lugner (83) he wasn't born, he was carved from an oak beam.
