Last of the Summer Wine (with Tractors)

Today dawned bright and sunny and called for a walk in the countryside hereabouts. A few of us decided to head into the vineyards on the hills by the nearby village of Gumpoldskirchen. There were some fine tractors to be seen and there were many temporary stalls and taverns along the way offering fresh wine or soda water, and fortifying food for the walker; various cakes including traditional apple strudel, and large slices of brown bread smothered with traditional spreads of pumpkin, beetroot or paprika cheese. It was a great day. The above pictures may give you a flavour of it.

Prosit! Und alles gut!

A little light music in the village square

  1. It is good to see a celebration of farming by the farmers in your area. We had the annual ploughing and drawing match here yesterday. The hard work and labour of the year culminating in a day of healthy competition and sharing.

    1. This particular 'celebration' goes on at weekends until the end of October (weather permitting). On Saturday they had an "Austropop" concert which we perhaps fortunately missed. On Sundays things have to be a bit quieter!

  2. The David Brown tractor (white with red wheels) would like your title Gwil. They made them in Huddersfield. The only Austrian tractor I know is the Steyr. They were green. Steyr use to make tanks during the WW2. I think Steyr and David Brown were both taken over by Case. I own a Ford 3000 tractor.

    1. Thanks Dave. The makes of the above tractors are Mercedes, Eicker, Steyr, David Brown, and Farmer (from top to bottom).

  3. Lovely photographs of a super event Gwil - and a nice change
from the doom and gloom in the world at the moment. The farmer was really interested in the tractors and got the Mercedes and the David Brown in an instant. The other three were unfamiliar.

    1. Thanks. Autumn is a great time of year for there always something going on in the countryside, a sort of final joyful flourish before winter sets in I suppose.
The doom and gloom of the present time will be as nothing to the doom and gloom coming along if the world doesn't get its act together. I just saw the new Oliver Stone movie Snowden at our local cinema and the future is perilous is the best I can say. Great film though. Well made. Well acted. And well researched. A very important work. Not to be missed.
